“You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet I’m one of the lucky ones.”
-Greta Thunberg
Greta Thunberg lambasted the world leaders at the UN Summit for their inactivity towards the issue on climate change that caused a disappointment to the young people. In a striking speech, she called on to world leaders regarding the urgent need to stop the effects of climate change.
“We’ll be watching you,” she started. “This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us young people for hope. How dare you!”
Thunberg’s eyes become teary as she proceeded to criticize what she saw as the lack of response by world leaders to combat climate change. “People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!”
The teen activist presented more than 30 years of scientific evidence indicating the implications of a relentlessly global warming, and conveyed condemnation to officials who understood the facts, yet still done nothing. She told the leaders around the world that they are still not yet mature enough to tell the people about the real current situation of the world regarding the climate change.
Thunberg ended her speech and gave a warning to world leaders. “You are failing us. But the young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us, I say: We will never forgive you. The world is waking up. And change is coming, whether you like it or not,” she said with evident disappointment and determination.
This speech is not just for world leaders but for everyone. It is just a shame that the people whose work is to lead are the ones who are leading its people to a wrong path. The fact is that the home for a lot of species is coming to an end if people do not do something. Do people not realize what word would be formed if the last letter of the word “Earth” was placed first? Every change do not just start with a realization because realization without action is nothing.
